I recently discovered an interesting
website-based game, called Z-Type.
The entire objective of the game, is to
eliminate the approaching suicide ships.
Your ship is immobile, but destroying an
incoming ship, in a novel way, is possible-
You have to type out the word attached to
the ship, firing a shot for each letter, finally
destroying it, at the end of the word.
The game is well programmed, and doesn't
put the same letter at the start of 2 words. It
starts out easy, but gets harder, and is a fun
and engaging typing exercise.
Even more recently, I saw a youtube video,
by Node, which had some interesting tech.
It was called Control Virtual-Reality, or
Control VR for short. It took virtual reality
to a whole new level, even more advanced
than previous VR devices, like the Oculus
Rift. It would also make video games even
more realistic, which is why they were
interested in it.
But you might see why this could be a problem.
While nearly all smart devices are being built with
gesture- recognising capability, this technology
would NOT improve keyboard input, and even
possibly slow it down, for it removes the feel and
intuitiveness of a real keyboard. But, there is an
answer in the fictional novel Digital Fortress by
Dan Brown-
A contract killer who is deaf, is given messages via
a retinal implant, or a contact lens. One of the two,
I'm sure. But the device is small, and cannot connect
to a relatively clumsy keyboard. So, he uses sensors
and gyroscopes on his finger-tips, to detect movement.
He then uses a certain finger movement to type and
send messages to his client.
There is a chance that doing small finger-tip touches, or
drawing circles in the air may result in a UI that could
successfully type, and do other functions, without making
the user look silly.
